Over 2,000 years ago, The Great One liked it. He liked it so much, as a matter of fact, that he named it a Municipium, the ancient Roman term for a town or a city. And ever since Julius Caesar has declared Lisbon to be a major city, nearly everyone – from the Germanic tribes to Napoleon Bonaparte to today's over 3.5 million tourists a year – likes it. A lot.

Portugal's capital city lies on continental Europe south-western coast, in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, where the Atlantic Ocean meats river Tagus. It is clearly a beach city, enjoying nearly 300 days of sun per year, allowing for major sports to exist practically all year round. Year after year, Lisbon's two major football clubs – Benfica and Sporting – play their trade during European competitions. Year after year, those two clubs export – well, sell for the highest bidder to the tune of tenths of million Euros, sometimes even more – players that are considered to be among the continent's elite.

Starting with the great, late Eusebio, that led Benfica and Portugal to European glory in the 60's, through another all-time great, Christiano Ronaldo, who came out of Sporting's academy, current Portugal's golden generation is playing their craft among Europe's top teams.

It only takes a visit to those two famous sports venues to understand the size and magnitude of Lisbon's football scene – Benfica's 64,628-seat Estadio da Luz and Sporing's 50,095-seat Estadio Jose Alvalade.

And, of course, after you have enjoyed the magnificent atmosphere in Lisbon's stadiums, remember there is plenty to watch and experience around the city.
